Ford, Renault and Hyundai halt operations in flood-hit Chennai
Prominent auto makers like Hyundai, Ford and Renault have halted operations at their manufacturing units located in flood hit Chennai. Hyundai Motor India suspended three shifts including one yesterday night and two for today at their production facility. The operations however will be resumed after the heavy rains stop. Hyundai’s manufacturing unit in Chennai has a capacity to manufacture 6.8 lakh vehicles in a year. Apart from Hyundai, Ford India has also halted operations at its production unit due to floods.
Ford’s spokesperson confirmed that the company has stopped production at its Chennai facility due to heavy rains causing flood, this step has been taken contemplating safety of the employees. The operations will be resumed as soon as the weather condition improves in Chennai. The spokesperson further stated that company will analyse the situation and resume normal operations as and when the situation improves. Ford’s Chennai unit has a capacity to manufacture 2 lakh cars and 3.4 lakh engines in a year.
Similarly, Renault also suspended operations at its Chennai unit owing to the same reason. Renault India Operations Country CEO and Managing Director Sumit Sawhney mentioned that the company has halted production temporarily until situation improves in Chennai. He further said that safety of employees is the primary concern and the company is keeping a close watch on the situation. Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai is capable of producing 4.8 lakh vehicles annually.
