Ford India recalls 20,700 units of its Ecosport compact SUV
The Ford Ecosport, best-selling car in the Indian automobile market for Ford has been recalled to address a fuel and vapour line corrosion issue which could create a problem for the car in the long run. About 20,700 units of the Ecosport will be recalled. There are about 19,441 units of the top-end Titanium variant which has the 1.5-litre diesel/1.0 litre Ecoboost petrol engine which have a problem with the seat-belt sensors which deploy the side airbags. About 2,715 units of the petrol variant will be checked for complaints regarding corrosion of the fuel line. Around 1,404 Ecosport compact SUV`s would require attention to both the problems, the fuel line corrosion and seat belt sensors.
Only vehicles manufactured between January 2013 and September 2014 would need to be recalled. “The safety of our customers is always top priority at Ford. For their peace of mind, we have initiated a field service action to correct product concerns on 20,752 Ford EcoSport vehicles in India” is what a Ford spokesperson mentioned in a statement to the media. There were a lot of complaints from the consumers regarding the corrosion of the fuel, which may have initiated the company to recall its vehicles.
Just a month after the Ford Ecosport was launched, about 1,000 units of the diesel Ecosport were called back to relocate the modules of the glow plug in the engine’s architecture. The glow plug required an e-mounting on the module in the engine. A glow plug is device, which helps to burn fuel more efficiently when the engine is ignited.
Ford had to recall about 3,072 Fiestas on the 21st of November over a safety issue. Ford India has a reputation as the company that recalls its cars, with about 3 lakh cars being recalled since the inception of the voluntary recall code that was passed by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, in July 2002.
Ford India has had a steady decline and has seen a drop in 9% in its sales. Till August 2014, Ford has only sold 53,525 cars. The Ecosport has only sold 36,389 cars in this fiscal year. Ford Eco-sport had made a huge impact in the market, being the first compact SUV launched by Ford in India with its 1-litre turbo petrol Ecoboost engine, which received international acclaim. Unfortunately Ford India has a reputation of bad after-sales service, and incidents like these give the company a bad image. In spite of this, Ford Ecosport happens to be the best selling product for Ford India.
