Hard Times for Ford: Reduced Sales of Figo Siblings, Production halved

New Ford Figo

Since the launch of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford India Pvt Ltd is facing hard times due to the reduced sales of its cars. And it’s not just the EcoSport whose sales figures have dropped down, even the Figo and the Figo Aspire are unable to meet the expected sales numbers.

The company launched the Figo siblings last year when their compact SUV, the EcoSport, was selling in good numbers. And the company had huge expectations from the Figo /Figo Aspire as they had ticked all the right boxes and Ford even managed to price the cars appropriately. The expectations were so high that Ford had planned to produce 20,000 units every month at their Sanand Plant, but now the sales are so low that Ford had to stop operations at the plant for a week and now they have planned to produce only 6500 units of the Figo siblings every month.

The reduced sales are a result of high competition in the hatchback and the compact sedan segment where the Figo and the Figo Aspire compete, respectively. The Figo competes with the Maruti Swift, Hyundai Grand i10, Honda Brio and the Tata Bolt while the Figo Aspire has to compete with the likes of Swift Dzire, Hyunndai Xcent, Tata Zest and the Honda Amaze.

The Figo/Figo Aspire come with various engine options, a 1.5 litre Diesel producing 100 bhp and a 1.2 litre petrol producing 88 Bhp. Both these engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. While there is a third engine option, a 1.5 litre petrol motor mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission which produces 112 Bhp.
The prices for the Figo start at Rs 4.3 lakhs.
