Ford commences work on the next generation Fiesta model
According to a very recent news report, Ford is conducting customer clinics for the development of the next generation Fiesta model in Brazil which is slated to make its first appearance in 2017. Given the codename B500, the Fiesta will spawn a hatchback and a mid-size sedan much like the current model and will go on sale internationally as the 2018 model. It will most likely be based on the C1 MCA modular platform which will be the basis for the next generation Ford Escort sedan as well. It is interesting to note that India and China will also provide many inputs for the development of the new Fiesta, along with Brazil.
On the mechanical front, the B500 will be powered by a newly developed 1.5-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine in Brazil and the new motor will most likely be based on the famous 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine which has won numerous awards worldwide. The new engine will also be developed through a cost effective means thereby making the motor lightweight and more fuel efficient as well as compared to the current crop of engines.
The American car maker’s research and development plant in Tamil Nadu which recently attracted an investment in the range of Rs. 4000-5000 crores will play an important role in the development of the B500. This is mainly due to the fact that the sedan version will be retailed in India replacing the current Fiesta that has not been able to find many buyers in our country. The new model should improve in terms of offering more interior space so that it can give a tough fight to other C-segment sedans. We really hope the new Ford Fiesta will be a more attractive proposition than the current model because it is definitely the best car to drive in the segment which includes the likes of the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and others.
