Fiat to launch Abarth brand in India by August 2015
Fiat Abarth will be launching its performance brand in India in August with three models. First up would be the Abarth 595, subsequently followed by the Punto and Avventura.
The news that all performance enthusiasts in our country were waiting for has arrived. Fiat has finally decided to bring the Abarth performance brand to our country this August. You heard it right! Want another surprise? The brand will not only be coming with one model, but with three of them.
The first of them will be the Abarth 595, which has been expecting to launch for a while now. This is the high performance version of the Fiat 500 that was retailed in our country with a diesel heart not so long ago. The hot hatch has a 1.4-litre T-Jet turbo petrol engine that offers 158 BHP on tap and will brought into our country as a CBU, with prices ranging between Rs. 27-30 lakhs. Compared to the vehicle it is based on, the Abarth 595 gets a much stiffer suspension tuning and bigger wheels as well.
The next car will be the Fiat Punto Evo Abarth. This will also get the same 1.4-litre T-Jet motor that is found in the Linea, but will produce 135 BHP instead. To differentiate it from the standard Punto Evo, the Abarth will get sportier looking exteriors including larger wheels and maybe even decals. The suspension might or might not be played around with, but the same might happen if Fiat wishes. Fortunately, this car will be locally assembled in India thereby giving it competitive pricing. As a matter of fact, Fiat is trying to localise it as much as possible since the engine is already on sale in India in the 112 BHP guise, so bumping up the power would not be much of an issue. Globally, the Punto Evo Abarth is sold as a three-door but we will instead get a five-door version.
The third product is the Avventura. However, this car will not get the sporty visual upgrades and suspension setup as the Punto Evo Abarth. It will get the same T-Jet unit as the previous hatchback, producing 135 BHP. The Avventura Abarth will also not feature the Abarth logo, but will rather get a badge saying ‘Powered by Abarth’.
The Punto Evo Abarth will take on the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI in the segment while the Avventura Abarth will lock horns with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine equipped Ford EcoSport. With heavy localisation, the Punto Evo Abarth could make the Rs. 10 lakhs and below cut, while the same looks tough for the T-Jet Avventura. Anyhow, this comes as amazing news for performance enthusiasts in our country and we are definitely looking forward for these cars to launch in India at the earliest. Good job Fiat!
