Fiat to launch sub 4-metre compact SUV in 2016
Ford India got its act right with the Ecosport and the compact SUV is currently the largest sales driver for the American auto major in India. Ford Ecosport is currently the only under 4-metre compact SUV in India. Looking at the success of the Ecosport, Fiat India is planning to launch a compact SUV in India by 2016.
As per reports Fiat`s compact SUV will be based on the company`s X3U platform and will directly compete with the Ecosport. Fiat is keen on making its presence felt in the compact SUV segment as soon as possible. What we hear is that the company is giving final touches to the product on the design front. The Avventura crossover will be going on sale next month and will firmly establish Fiat`s credentials as an SUV player in the Indian market. According to company sources the X3U is expected to be launched during the first quarter of 2016 and is likely to be unveiled at the next Auto Expo in New Delhi. The compact SUV from fiat will feature aggressive styling, best in class ride and handling and an all-new 1.5 litre diesel engine. The new diesel engine from Fiat will be a downsized version of the 1.6 litre JTD unit that is currently being used in many Fiat models. To get the pricing right Fiat has downsized the engine. The reduction in cubic capacity of the engine to 1500cc, will help Fiat save Rs 15,000 by way of taxes per car. The power and torque figures of the engine are not yet clear but from what we know, the power output could be well over 100BHP. The X3U compact SUV will be available with both manual and automatic transmissions when launched in India.
The Italian car maker has been studying the Indian market and plans to go aggressive with a slew of launches lined up for the next three years. Fiat will be launching the Avventura crossover next month, which is based on the Punto.
