Fiat India has just launched the Abarth 595 Competizione hatchback in the country at an introductory price of Rs. 29.85 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). Based on the standard Fiat 500, the performance version carries the 500’s retro design forward while Abarth has tuned the vehicle on the mechanical front to make it a hoot to drive.

The performance hatchback is different from the car it is based on thanks to its sporty characteristics including restyled bumpers at the front and rear end, side skirts, body decals, amazing 17-inch alloy wheels, a black roof, spoiler, quad exhausts and finally the signature Scorpion badges. It is 3657 mm long, 1627 mm wide, 1485 mm tall and has a wheelbase spanning 2300 mm. The hatch weighs just 1045 kgs.

Mechanically, the Fiat Abarth 595 derives 160 BHP of power from a 1.4-litre T-Jet, turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 230 Nm of torque between 2750 to 3000 RPM. A 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) drives power to the wheels of the uber fast hatchback. It has steering mounted paddle shifters and can be driven in two modes – Sport (S) and Drive (D). Though the Abarth 595 Competizione does not boast of very impressive power, it has a good power to weight ratio due to its relatively low weight. It can reach a top speed of 210 km/hr and hit 100 km/hr from standstill in just 7.6 seconds.

Stepping inside the car, the interiors are finished in a red and black colour theme, lending a very sporty appeal to the hatchback. The dashboard sports a touchscreen infotainment unit with built in navigation. Other features includes premium leather upholstery, 7-inch TFT instrument panel, aluminium finished pedals, rear parking sensors, multi-function steering wheel and Blue&Me connectivity.

The new car will only be retailed through exclusive dealerships in Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata and the reason for its high pricing is the fact that it is being brought into the country via the CBU route. The Abarth 595 Competizione competes with the likes of the MINI Cooper S, BMW 1-Series, Mercedes A-Class and the upcoming Volkswagen Beetle as well.
