Daimler introduces its Autonomous truck; expected launch in 10 years
German commercial vehicle manufacturing major Daimler AG has revealed the concept for its automated or self-driving truck named as the ‘Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025’. This futuristic and innovative truck model will be capable of driving on its own without the help from its drivers on highways. The autonomous truck from Daimler will be fully equipped with many high-tech features such as advanced radar sensors as well as built-in camera technology on Highway Pilot system which is similar to the autopilot mode seen in aircrafts.
This new Daimler self-driving truck concept was displayed on the occasion of the 65th edition of International Motor Show for commercial vehicles in Hannover, Germany. While speaking on the concept, Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025’s features, Wolfgang Bernhard, Daimler’s Board Member for Trucks and Buses said that the company’s Future Truck 2025 offers convincing answers to all the challenges that the customers will be facing in the future.”
He further added by saying that the company’s aim is to press forward with the further development process of this technology for the market and to ready the concept for a series of production standards. He said that he is convinced that this will open up a new window for future development and new business perspective for the company. While speaking on the expected time frame for the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025’s actual market launch, Daimler said that as hinted by its name, the autonomous Truck should be on the roads in about 10 years of time and should launch before the year 2025. At the time of unveiling the concept of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025, Bernhard also had called for discussing on legality as well as political framework on self driving trucks and cars.
He said that the real challenge now is to further make use of this momentum and to continue the company’s open dialogue with all the parties which are involved. This is in order to make sure that in the time period of ten years, the autonomous trucks will actually become an accepted feature on the international roads. The company in a statement also revealed to the media that Daimler Trucks invests a massive 1 billion Euros every year for research and developmental process. The research and development on the much dreamt of self-driving vehicles are constantly gaining momentum in the entire global automotive sector. Many car majors and technology giants including Google have already revealed their autonomous cars that are intended to be launched in the future.
