Chevrolet to launch 10 new models in India by 2020
It seems that Chevrolet has finally decided to take its Indian operations seriously and strengthen its presence in our country by investing $1 billion. This includes launching 10 new models in the coming 5 years. First of the 10 new models includes the Trailblazer SUV which is expected to launch in the month of October and the Spin MPV that will debut by early 2017. Few of the other models includes the new Cruze and the Beat hatchback and notchback.
All of the investment will be made at the American car maker’s plant in Talegaon near Pune. Most of the investment will be targeted towards increasing the plant’s annual production capacity to 2.2 lakhs by 2025. At present, the plant puts out 1.3 lakh units annually. No further investment will be made at the Halol plant because the same will be shut down by the middle of next year.
CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra made the announcement that the latest investment is part of the company’s global plans of investing a total of $5 billion to improve its brand name and businesses in emerging countries specifically by developing a new platform of vehicles which will include the remaining 5 models. Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp, which is General Motors’ partner in China will help in the development of these 5 models through a collaborative effort.
The new family of vehicles will come with latest technologies that will help in improving safety, fuel efficiency and connectivity at an affordable price tag. The new models promise to be a great package, unlike any other car manufacturers present in markets including Brazil, India, China and Mexico where these 5 vehicles will be manufactured and sold. General Motors’ is also planning to substantially increase the levels of localization much like other car makers in India to price their vehicles very competitively in the market.
