C.S. Santosh to participate in the Dakar rally
For those who have followed motorsports, you must have heard of the Dakar rally. It is one of the most grueling motor sporting events in the entire world. It covers a course of 9000 kms and the Dakar rally will be held from the 4th to 17th of January 2015.
Indian Bike racing ace, C.S.Santosh will be participating in the Dakar rally, which will be held in Argentina. The 31-year old from Bangalore has won many championships, namely the super cross, dirt cross and many cross country rallies. He even won the Raid de Himalaya and Maruti Suzuki desert storm last year. But his most impressive feat was his performance in the world championships namely, Abu Dhabi (10th) Qatar (8th) and Morocco (22nd) which earned him an overall 10th position. This led to him receiving an invitation for the Dakar rally.
I was looking for a new challenge and the overall No.10 position in the world championship series landed me an invitation. I am excited and ‘The Dakar 2015’ organizers are excited because I will be the first Indian to take part in the event. Five-day rallying is demanding and this is going to be 15 days. Portugal’s Ruben Faria (a regular at ‘The Dakar’ from 2006) told me it’s very, very hard. But my aim is to finish. It’s a dangerous rally and I am in good shape though. The rally is all about navigating and finding your way. It all comes down to preparation with the road book, is what he told media persons in a press conference in Mumbai.
For his rally Santosh will be riding a red bull sponsored KTM450 rally bike. His other sponsor would be PB racing from Pune, which is run by the S Balan group. “I had never imagined doing the Dakar. I first caught up with the rally watching it on TV. After doing a lot of motocross and super cross, I was looking for a new adventure. Off-road rallies are more than racing and so the Dakar is the ultimate adventure. I have to now see if I have what it takes. I rode on World Cup races to see the level and learned a lot from these experiences. What worries me about the Dakar is the uncertainty. I really can’t predict what can happen. The best thing is to try and adapt and try to bring it home every day. I hope that the fact I’m the first Indian to do it will open the eyes of many people. Rallying is getting bigger in India and there are more and more people riding motorbikes. If I do well, it’ll show that there is not only cricket in India,’’ is what Santosh was quoted telling the Dakar website.
This is indeed a good time for Indian motorsports, we wish C.S Santosh the best of luck!
