BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage concept revealed
BMW is one of those manufacturers which is known to pay tribute to its old and legendary models from the past. This enables the company to demonstrate how important their past has been in determining their future course. Their homage to older models comes in the form of concept cars which also pave the way for future BMW car designs.
The latest concept car has been developed in tribute to the famous CSL, which was given the nickname ‘Batmobile’. The original 3.0 CSL was an endurance racing legend and only 1265 units of the same were built between the years 1972 and 1975. One of the best racing machines of its time, it often sped in famous racetracks like the Spa and Nurburgring.
The CS coupe was a very well-engineered prototype, which to lose weight was stripped out of all unnecessary items. The car had an aluminium bonnet and aluminium door skins. All other panels were made of thin-gauge steel panels. While similar cars from the UK were equipped with goodies like electric windows and fancy bumpers, the CSLs didn’t have most of these to keep weight at the lowest.
Coming to the new concept, this BMW car is not just pure eye candy, it features ultra-lightweight carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), a material the company has become an expert in across its range of M cars and which will soon underpin the all-new 7-Series as well. Special design elements like wraparound front wings which neatly integrates with the front bumper and the aero blades on the top-rear of the car, makes the concept look out of the ordinary and a one-off symbol for the original seventies model. The rear three-quarters is very clearly inspired from the i8. The rear wing is brilliantly combined with the body, with a superb set of full-length LED lights. The head behind this amazing design Karim Habib says that the vehicle was designed not only keeping the CSL in mind, but also the design language of the whole BMW stable altogether.
Like all BMW cars this one too packs a punch with its powerful motor. Under the bonnet is an eBoost, hybrid six-cylinder engine that is vented by a huge carbon fibre deflector, laser headlights and the meanest looking kidney grille ever seen on a BMW car. It sits on massive 21-inch bi-colour alloys with control blades on the wheel rims and like the i8, the concept features an all-wheel drive system.
The interiors are again a mashup between the CSL and the i8. A wood strip runs across the complete length of the dashboard and all driver aids are placed on the central display unit on the steering column.
Though this car will not make it anywhere close to the production line, fans will surely be screaming for the same to happen.
