Bajaj working on a new commuter bike platform
Currently the second largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country in terms of sales, Bajaj Auto has been known mainly for its two famous motorcycle brands the Pulsar and Discover. Most of the motorcycles coming from the company are slotted below the two aforementioned names mainly due to their popularity and market image. The recently launched Pulsar RS 200, AS 150 and AS 200 models are doing the job for the company at the higher end of the segment.
However, Bajaj is also known to be working on a new commuter brand like the Discover to get more sales going in the entry-level segment. From a recent shareholders’ meeting, the company’s research and development unit is going all out on a new commuter bike platform. Still in the initial phases of the program, the engine size has yet to be revealed along with the name. But one thing is for sure, the bikes that will result from the new line-up will be focussed towards the masses and will be retailed alongside the Discover series.
The engine capacity should vary between 125cc-150cc, in the very famous four stroke, single-cylinder and air-cooled format much like most of the other bikes selling in the same segments. The new motorcycles are also expected to feature different styling cues as well to set them apart from the pre-existing portfolio of products.
