Audi Q2 SUV to launch before Q1 sub-4-metre compact crossover
One of the main reasons that Audi was able to overtake rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW sometime back in India is thanks to its range of SUVs. The Q3 played an important role in the market as it was able to capture a vast amount of market share by making the brand more accessible to customers in the lower price segments.
Carrying forward the same legacy, Audi has revealed that they will be launching the Q2 SUV as well. However, the Q2 was supposed to be launched with the Q1 name as the Q2 moniker was owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). But this is not the case anymore. According to the company’s head of research and development, the Q1 will be making a public appearance after the more expensive Q2.
Adding to this, he also mentioned that the Q2 will be placed below the Q3 in the portfolio and will be based on the MQB platform, while the Q1 would be based on the next generation A1 platform. The MQB platform forms the basis for the A3 and Volkswagen Golf as well. The Q1 on the other hand will be tucked under the 4-metre mark. This will enable Audi to price the Q1 more aggressively in our country, given the tax and duty exemptions that it will be eligible for.
The bigger Audi Q2 will most likely derive power from parent company Volkswagen’s new three and four-cylinder petrol engines. The Q1 instead is expected to derive power from the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol motor that also powers the Polo hatchback here in India. Diesel power could come from a 1.5-litre motor. Anyhow, both the upcoming models are not close to making a launch anytime soon.
