Audi celebrates 25 years of TDI engine technology
German luxury car maker Audi is known for its famous diesel engines that are extremely powerful, refined and fuel efficient. Audi`s TDI diesel engine has completed 25 years. This engine in its 25 year journey has been through many modifications and changes to make it a better work-horse. The TDI diesel engine powers a wide range of cars under the Audi brand.
Rewind the clock to 1989; this was when this engine was introduced at the Frankfurt motor show. Back then this engine was a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder TDI that pumped out 118bhp and developed a massive 265Nm of twisting force. The engine was first introduced in the Audi 100 which was capable of reaching a top speed of 200km/h and delivered a fuel economy figure which was low compared to today`s modern Audi`s. Back then the engine was a thirsty unit but there have been vast improvements in its 25 year long journey. Audi claims that the TDI engine in its current state has seen a 98% decrease in emissions while the power and torque figures in comparison to the displacement have increased by 100%.
The TDI engine powers many models like the Audi A4, A6, Q3, Q5 and Q7 range of cars and SUV`s in India. Audi is also silently working on a plug-in hybrid engine which will power its future cars. Audi will soon be launching the A3 sedan in India on August 7th.
