Audi bets big on A3 compact sedan
Audi is betting big on the A3 sedan which will be launched on August 7th in India. It`s not a surprise since Audi sold 10,002 units in India in 2013 beating its German rivals Mercedes (9,003 units) and BMW (7,327 units) to take the no 1 position.
Mercedes launched the A –Class and BMW the 1-series luxury hatchback in 2013. The A-Class in particular has been selling like hot cakes since its launch. Audi was not present in this segment and will be bringing in the A3 to fill the gap. Audi is so optimistic about the A3 sedan that it has already started manufacturing the car at Skoda`s Aurangabad plant which falls under the VW group. The A3 sedan is the first model from Audi to be produced locally before being launched in India.
The reason for Audi starting production of the car even before the launch is due to the market potential of the A3, followed by world class infrastructure at the Aurangabad plant. The yearly capacity at the plant for all Audi models is more than 14,000 units in a one-shift operation. The advantage that Audi A3 compact sedan has over the Mercedes A-class and BMW 1-series is the boot which makes it a proper sedan, and will be available at a slight premium over the A-class and 1-series.
Audi is targeting young aspiring customers and buyers looking for a second car. Audi has a slight edge against its competitors and could open up a whole new segment in the luxury space. The Audi A3 sedan has been a huge success internationally and has been awarded the “World car of the year” in 2014. The A3 when launched in India will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options mated to a Dual clutch automatic gearbox.
