2016 Toyota Hilux Pickup (Fortuner based) spied, Thailand launch in June
Toyota, the Japanese auto manufacturer has been testing the Next-Gen model of its Hilux Pickup outside India, in Thailand and Australia. Based on its best selling Fortuner SUV, the company’s 2016 Hilux pickup was recently spied revealing its interiors indicating that the launch is anytime soon. Adding to this, the camouflaged Hilux pickup was seen with 2WD and 4WD during its testing phase.
Through the spy shots, it is confirmed that the Hilux will be based on Toyota`s New Global Architecture Platform, which is in a way similar to the VW MQB platform. This platform will open room for the Japanese automaker to build numerous other vehicles like the Fortuner, Prius and Innova in future.
As the Fortuner is Toyota’s best selling model in the Indian market, its new version is expected to come with new features and design to challenge the competition. From the spy images, one can spot the Hilux with interesting features like LED daytime running lights, alloy wheels, HID projector headlights and the works.
Inside the cabin, the spy shots reveal some of the interesting features the Toyota Hilux is equipped with. Two-pod instrument binnacle, a 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, appealing center console with bulging touchscreen infotainment system to be known as’ floating center console’ are to name a few. Controls for the HVAC are also positioned under the floating center console. One can expect the company to even offer an automatic climate control system on the top-end variants.
Under the hood, the company will go ahead replacing its 2.5L and 3.0L diesel mills, instead will offer the SUV with the new 2.4L diesel mill as well as a 2.8L diesel motor coupled to a five and six-speed manual gearbox and six-speed automatic transmission unit. These powertrains will also come with adjustable driving modes to increase the power and torque output.
As anticipated, the Japanese automaker will reveal its Hilux pickup sometime in June in Thailand, post that, one can expect the unveiling of the new Fortuner to take place in July 2015. Once launched, expect the Hilux pickup to fight it out with the likes of the Nissan Navarra, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Chevrolet Colorado.
