2015 Maruti Suzuki Baleno diesel to get a more powerful 90PS variant

Maruti Suzuki Baleno 10

Maruti’s latest entrant in the B+ segment, ‘Baleno’ is due to get a more powerful diesel engine. Having got off to a good start, the premium hatchback roped in 40,000 bookings so far, posing a strong threat to its arch rival Hyundai Elite i20. Placed a notch above Swift in Maruti Suzuki India’s line-up, Baleno missed out on a powerful diesel engine which would have given it an edge in the segment. Currently, the Maruti Baleno diesel features a Fiat sourced 1.3 litre, Multijet diesel engine which serves in some of its other popular cars like Swift. Power on offer by the diesel unit is 75 PS along with 190 Nm, however the company is contemplating to get a more powerful version of the 1.3 litre DDiS engine which generates 90 PS of power. Weighing 100 kgs lighter than the Swift, Baleno already has the advantage of a unified power-to-weight ratio and with more power to the front wheels the performance is going to get even better.

In comparison to its competitors, Baleno’s current diesel engine offers the least power in the segment with rivals like Honda Jazz offering 100 PS and Hyundai Elite i20 drawing 90 PS from the 1.4 litre diesel motor. Other than the aforementioned models there is VW’s performance version of Polo, GT TDI which generates 105 PS and Fiat’s Punto which bangs out 93 PS of power from the same 1.3 litre diesel engine. On the whole, the hatchback needs a higher output diesel motor to keep abreast with competitors in the B+ segment. To make it more frugal and efficient Maruti Suzuki India could also bestow the SHVS technology introduced recently in other models like Maruti Ertiga MPV and Maruti Ciaz sedan. But there is no confirmation regarding the same from the auto maker, hence we have to wait until launch to see if MSI introduces SHVS technology on the Baleno or not.
