2014 Ford Fiesta spotted with an automatic gearbox
The Indian car market is one of the toughest markets to crack and many car manufacturers have learnt it the hard way. Ford after being in India for nearly a decade found success with the Ecosport. The American multinational automaker launched the new Ford Fiesta in India last year only with a diesel engine. The diesel Fiesta sedan did not exactly set the sales charts on fire. We have known the petrol car for its performance oriented 1.6 litre petrol motor on the older generation Fiesta, the new model sorely misses out on that, something which petrol enthusiasts would definitely vouch for.
A little birdie now tell us that a Fiesta test mule has been spotted testing with an automatic gearbox. The spy shot clearly reveals the auto stick! We understand that Ford is testing the automatic variant for our markets. Though we don’t have official confirmation regarding this, but considering the fact that the Ecosport features a 1.5 TiVCT petrol motor mated to a 6 speed dual clutch auto box, it appears this Fiesta is using the same mechanicals.
The 6 speed DCT on the Ecosport comes with a dry sump technology which helps in keeping the unit maintenance free for a decade. The 1.5 litre petrol motor bangs out 112 PS of power and 140 Nm of peak torque.
With petrol prices dipping and all major car manufacturers offering petrol cars with an automatic variant in their line-up, it does make sense for Ford to launch the Fiesta automatic. The forthcoming Figo Aspire will also feature the same gearbox-engine combo.
